**1) Predict the direction of induced current in the situations described by the following figures [6.18 (a) to (f)].**

Solution:

(a) According to Lenz’s law, current is induced in a coil in the clockwise direction when seen from end ‘q’. So end ‘q’ of the coil behaves like a south pole. Hence, the direction of induced current will be along prop.

(b) For coil XY, the north pole of the magnet is moved away. According to Lenz’s law, current is induced in a coil in the clockwise direction when seen from end ‘X’. So end ‘X’ of the coil behaves like a south pole. Hence, the current will be along yzxy, and in coil ‘pq’, induced current will be along prep.

(c) When the tap is just closed, the direction of the current in the coil seen from the side of coil XYZ is anti clockwise and increasing. So, the direction of induced current in the coil XYZ will be along xyz.
