Solutions – Solutions
1) Give an example of solid solution in which the solute is a gas.
Solution
Occulsion of hydrogen gas in palladium is a gas in solid solution. This is observed during hydrogenation reaction when the hydrogen atoms, due to their small size gets trapped in the interstitial spaces between the palladium atoms.
2) Define the following terms:
- i) Mole fraction
Solution
Mole fraction: The mole fraction of a constituent (solute or solvent in a solution is the ratio of number of moles of that component to the total numbers of moles of all the components present in the solution.
It is denoted by X. Mole fraction is expressed for both solute and solvent.
