Excretory Products and their Elimination – Solutions
1. Define Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)
Solution:
The amount of glomerular filtrate formed in all athe nephrons of both the kidneys per minute is known as the Glomerular Filtration Rate. In a healthy individual, it is about 125 ml/minute.
2. Explain the autoregulatory mechanism of GFR.
Solution:
The mechanism by which the kidney regulates the glomerular filtration rate is autiregulative. It is carried out by the following methods:
i) Control by anti-duretic hormone (ADH)
ADH, produced in the hypothalamus of the brain and released into the blood stream from the posterior pituitary gland, enhances fluid retention by making the kidneys reabsorb more water primarily by affecting the permeability of the distal convoluted tubule and the collecting duct.
