Biodiversity and Conservation – Solutions
1. Name the three important components of biodiversity.
Biological diversity is the variety of genes, species and ecosystems in a particular region. It can be observed at three levels:
a) Genetic diversity
b) Species diversity
c) Community and ecosystem diversity.
2. How do ecologists estimate the total number of species present in the world?
There are different methods for the estimation of the number of species. In general, the biologists make a statistical comparison of a well studied species in temperate and tropical regions and extrapolate this ratio to the other groups of plants and animals.
