1. Name the three important components of biodiversity.
Solution:
Biological diversity is the variety of genes, species and ecosystems in a particular region. It can be observed at three levels:
a) Genetic diversity
b) Species diversity
c) Community and ecosystem diversity.
2. How do ecologists estimate the total number of species present in the world?
Solution:
There are different methods for the estimation of the number of species. In general, the biologists make a statistical comparison of a well studied species in temperate and tropical regions and extrapolate this ratio to the other groups of plants and animals.
