1) Define environmental chemistry.
Environmental chemistry deals with the study of chemical and biochemical phenomena that occur in our surroundings. It includes the study of the sources, reactions, transport, effects and the fate of chemical species in the air, soil and water , and the effect of human activity on these.
2) Explain trophospheric pollution in 100 words.
Trophospheric pollution arises due to the presence of the oxides of sulphur (SO2) , nitrogen (N02 ),carbon and hydrocarbons in the lower atmosphere.
SO2 and N02 react with atmospheric moisture and oxygen to form nitric acid (HNO3) and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) , which leads to ‘acid rain’ . Acid rain harm soil and vegetation.
N02 , O3, aldehydes and hydrocarbons are responsible for photochemical smog or PAN .
