Photosynthesis – Solutions
1. By looking at a plant externally, can you tell whether a plant is C3
or C4? Why and how?
Solution:
It is not possible to identify C3 or C4 plant on the basis of morphological observations. Leaf anatomy is one criterion for distinguishing C3 and C4 plants, as C4 plants are characterised by the presence of ‘kranz anatomy’.
2. By looking at which internal structure of a plant can you tell
whether a plant is C3 or C4? Explain.
Solution:
C3 and C4 plants can be distinguished on the basis of leaf anatomy. C4 plants have ‘kranz anatomy’, which is characterised by the presence of dimorphic chloroplasts.
